Summary: Erin, otherwise known as Ms. G, is a first-year teacher at a newly integrated California high school. Racial tensions are high and educator expectations are low. Based on a true story, the teacher buys journals with her own money. They write and write - about gang violence, experiencing homelessness, family tensions, food insecurity, and more.
Takeaways: Although "integrated", segregation is still affecting our public schools today. Taking place in the ‘90s, this movie shows examples of apparent racism (such as students bullying other students for their looks) but also delves into the ways in which the administration in power can strip students of their access to equitable learning (such as refusing to allow the students of color to read the books in the curriculum). Although it often paints an unrealistically easy journey at times, Freedom Writers provides a great take on what some students are up against.
